You can write on thermal labels with permanent markers and gel pens. But if you use the common ballpoint pens to write on thermal labels, it will smear. Unlike regular papers, thermal label papers are not designed to absorb ink, so you must wait patiently for the ink to dry regardless of the type of writing utensil you’re using.. Thermal paper is always hit or miss, and you’ll want to test things out as you come across them. I find that most inks never dry on thermal, with the exception of Sharpies, but I’ve had colored sharpies “bleed” and leave a tinted fuzzy border around the ink.
